I’ve wanted to see this country for a long time so I’m excited to be here. We’re in Golfito on the Pacific side, not too far from the Panama Border. This is definitely a beautiful country! On the bus ride we passed amazing trees, lots of rocky rivers and streams, and vegetation so thick it would be difficult to get through.
We’re in a villa overlooking the water and marina and we’re very happy with our accommodations. I will have to take photos and write a bit about it when I have time. So far we’ve just settled in, walked to the supermarket and in town a bit, and had some dinner. We have two more full days here and we are very close to some parks known for their wonderful wildlife, so I’m excited about what is to come.
There are noisy birds that fly overhead and I don’t think they are parrots. They are too big and the calls are different. I think they are wild macaws! I heard they are in this area. How cool is that!
The first photo in Costa Rica!
The bus stop in Neily, a guy and his little boy, and the bean/tomato/onion salesman taking a break.
I took this while we checked in at the office while waiting for the manager to find his shoes. He says he doesn’t wear them enough and tends to lose them.
It looks like the rain is coming this way.
We saw this amazing butterfly in the road! We tried to rescue it but it kept flying farther away from us, so hopefully it made it to safety on the other side.
We crossed a stream and saw this interesting bird walking around in the water.
The rain cleared as the sun got lower in the sky, making for a very pretty view over the water.
There are some very nice boats parked out there! The manager told us that many come here to escape from hurricane season farther north.
The setting sun is starting to color the sky and the mist and clouds hang over the hills.
We walked down by the water and came across this interesting sight.
An old boat in the water makes for a pretty photo.
Pretty sunset colors are reflected in the water.
We’re walking down the main street of town heading back to our villa.
More interesting boats and a pretty view.
Dusk falls, and the light is almost gone.
A couple guys are still fishing as it gets almost dark.

The place sounds nice. I’ve been to Costa Rica couple of times, but never Golfito. Did you take a bus from David?
Looking forward to more photos.

Yes, we took the bus and it was easy (and inexpensive). We heard taking a car across the border can be complicated, and sometimes it’s easier to just let someone else drive.

We have to cross to Costa Rica in January and Golfito sound nice. Is there a direct bus that will take you from David to Golfito? I would appreciate all the input you can give us.

You take a bus to the border, go through the border checkpoints on foot (be sure and read my recent post about the border crossing!!), and then catch another bus to Golfito.
I would recommend going on to Puerta Jimenez by ferry. We liked it there better and it’s a short boat ride. We’re going back there in a couple weeks so stay tuned for more news.

Thanks Kris, this was helpful. We took a bus to Jaco and then San Jose about year ago and it was fun.

You’re welcome. I also enjoy buses. You can see the scenery and not worry about driving.

Any marked differences, i.e. culture, nature? I like the bus idea. How long is your trip? There are issues as to how long right? David.

It took us 5 hours, door to door – cab to the terminal, maybe an hour in the bus to the border, a while getting through the border crossing and changing money (all went very well, but takes a bit of time). Then, the bus to Golfito was another hour, maybe a bit more, then checking in at our villa (with a talkative manager), and here we were.
It is different here and I will have to write more about that soon. I thought it would be more the same since we’re not that far from our area in Panama, but there are definite differences.

Oh, I hope I didn’t miss your post about the differences. I’m anxious to read your comparisons. Did you find the prices to be comparable or higher?

I figured I’d wait until we finished our trip and I gave it a bit of thought before I wrote a comparison post, so stand by. Prices are definitely higher here. We really noticed it in the supermarket.
