We were told that scorpions tend to come in houses during the dry season because they are looking for water. We have found this to be true so far. We are now in the height of rainy season though and yesterday, when we were showering, I happened to look over at the shower curtain and there he was!
This is the second time we have found one near the top of the shower curtain. It was probably hiding in the folds and when we pulled the curtain closed, he was revealed. I think these are pretty cool critters, but not in the house please. Joel got it into a bucket and I tossed it over the fence into the woods where, hopefully, it will make its way somewhere else.
We share our environment with a lot of various critters so it’s always good to shake out clothes, shoes, towels, and anything else where something might be hiding. And, never put your bare hands in leaf piles or other likely hiding places outdoors either. These are good things to do anywhere you live, just in case.
I love living next to the woods because of all the birds and wildlife! If one gets a bit closer than I’d like, at least I can grab a camera and share a photo before it gets “relocated” over the back fence.
I’ve been stung twice – no fun at all. I sure do not appreciate them in my house.

Definitely something best avoided. Hopefully it never happens to you again!

We were eating on the patio last night. Our dog Bella started barking at something nearby in the dark. Shined a flashlight on the area and it was a scorpion. Haven’t seen one since last December. Maybe the dry season is coming early this year. Glad Bella knows to stay away. Just a reminder to watch where I walk, since I usually don’t wear shoes in the house and patio.

Brave, going without shoes. I usually step on a pebble or something I don’t like. I hope the dry season doesn’t come early! I love everything so lush and green, Thank goodness Bella knows to stay away, and hopefully you don’t get bothered by any others.

I have to say that I just got my first real sting recently after 7 years and much of that in the jungle.
I am so glad to have it over with – the wait is over now and it wasn’t as bad as I thought.
As it happens my experience produced much less pain than a bullet ant!

From what I have heard it hurts but isn’t terrible. The bullet ant, on the other hand, is supposed to be the most painful bite there is!

Sorry, Kris, but scorpions are one critter that I don’t relocate. I kill ’em as soon as I see ’em. UGH! They give me nightmares.

OK, no scorpions but dead ones at your house! I did think we could try roasted scorpion for dinner, but just my luck I’d get stung trying to do that 😀

How bad is the sting (if it happens?)

Can’t you die from it ???

These type of scorpions will just leave you with a little numbness around the area where you are “tagged”, trust me I know. Never weed or mess around in the garden without gloves like Kris says. If you’re allergic to bee or wasp stings the reaction would likely be the same, so more severe. Overall the sting is more bothersome than anything and it depends on how much venom the critter injects into you.

Great minds… 😀 Thanks amiga!

I have heard that the sting is similar to a bee sting, enough to make you say some colorful words but not especially dangerous. There are a few very dangerous scorpions in the world but the vast majority are just painful and I don’t think any of the deadly ones live here.

Our friend Lee, who lived in Santo Domingo, was stung 3 times on his toes in bed. He finally removed the bed skirt and no more scorpions in his bed.
The worst stings are from the smallest scorpions as they have not yet learned how much venom to release, so they give you all they have.

I have heard that about the small scorpions, and I’ve heard the same thing about snakes too. I also hear that it is good to have none of the bedding touching the floor where something could climb up it, so that makes sense about the bed skirt. I believe this gives me a good excuse for having our bedding in a heap in the middle of the bed 😀
