We are lucky to live in Chiriqui Province where they grow most of the produce for all of Panama. There is very fertile soil and cooler temperatures up in “the highlands”, or up in the mountains so they grow tons of vegetables. It is something to see the farms literally on the sides of the mountains! It’s a beautiful area and if you want to see some photos, check out a previous post on Cerro Punta.
Most Panamanians don’t have a lot of money so they have to shop carefully and get the best value for every penny. When my neighbor said she knew of the best produce market and offered to show me, of course I agreed! But, she said we have to go on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday after 3PM because that is when the trucks come in with new supplies.
We are lucky to live here where we can have inexpensive, delicious, and very fresh produce every day. I noticed that I started feeling better within a month of moving here and I really think the fresh food has a lot to do with it. One time we lost the can opener and didn’t notice for weeks! It’s great to have fresh fruits and vegetables for every meal. This is one more reason to love Panama.

Just wondering, how much pesticides are on the veggies, do they spray a lot?

I don’t know. I have heard that they do but I haven’t seen it myself. I do know that produce is often less “perfect” than it is in the US so I take that as a good sign.

Hi I have a video of a similar or possibly the same creature you have in your lemon tree. I have no idea how to post it or if I’m contacting the correct person. I live in the UK and I found it crawling on my house phone eight years ago. It moves it’s head first then it’s like it sticks it down then pulls its back up in an arc shape then stretches out again. When it stops it lifts its whole body up except the end part where it sticks down and then it moves around like a stick in the air. Did you ever find out what creature it was.

Ahhh! Yes, one of the weird things I had on my lemon seedlings. Nope, never figured out what that one was and it only stuck around for a couple days.

Yeah this one was only around for a day to. We put it outside but unsure where it went. I googled the inch worm and it sounds like it could be one of them. This one was possibly a baby as it was so thin and we couldn’t see the ends of its head or tail. The videos o watched of them you could see clearly they had legs at each end. We leave tomorrow for our exploratory trip to Panama, and it is photos like this that get me even more excited to get there. Like Elvira, I am also concerned about pesticide use, and I agree, less than perfect looking on the outside is probably a good thing. I look forward to meeting you, but now I have to get packing!
