The chickens are now four weeks old, and they certainly have changed a lot in that time! They have gone from this at one day old
to this, at two weeks old.
This is the chickens on the 13th, three weeks and three days old. They are pretty funny looking at the moment. The white ones have been eating a lot and putting on weight, where the dark ones are not as big but are growing more feathers.
I stopped by on Friday the 14th, and the chickens were out in the yard. Harry, Cedo’s son was here for the weekend and was helping to chase them back in their house. It is easier to clean their house with them out, and they enjoy running around but when no one is home to keep an eye on them they have to go back in their house.
The older, egg laying chickens are now in the side yard. Cedo was tired of them digging up all her plants and they can get in less trouble there. I saw some bits of feathers on the ground and asked what happened. They girls are able to fly over the fence so Cedo clipped their wings a bit so they will stay where they are supposed to stay.
But, the good news from the older girls is that more of them are starting to produce eggs. They are pretty small at this point but they are just getting started, and the eggs are expected to get bigger in time.
home grown eggs!
Today, the 18th, the chicks are four weeks and one day old. They have grown more feathers and look considerably better, and they continue to grow rapidly. Cedo says they also continue to eat a lot and raise a fuss if their feed container ever runs low.
The older girls, fine looking girls that they are, they are all laying eggs now!
The hens hang out in the shade of the plants.
Look what I got last night! This is my first box of home grown eggs. I almost don’t want to eat them, but I’m also anxious to see what they are like. So, tomorrow, it’s home grown eggs for breakfast. Thank you chickens, and thank you Cedo for all the work taking care of them.

I get home grown eggs at a small Panamanian market, they are different from the Melo eggs at the Chino Market.

The babies are all roosters, all but one so no eggs from them. The older girls are 6 months old, the pretty brown ones and they are the one laying eggs now. It is interesting to watch them, especially when they are babies because they grow and change so fast.

Yep, there are two sets of chickens. And, there will probably be more soon to keep the freezer full.

That poor lonely little girl chicken! No other girls her age to hang out with! Will she be reserved for egg laying or is she destined to be Cedo’s dinner?
Really enjoyed watching the chickens grow :). Hope the eggs are tasty!!

I know. At this point they are too young to care. She is supposed to be dinner, and Cedo also says she is mine so I guess I would have the option to keep her around. I’ll have to see how it goes. The eggs are excellent!

Hi Kris I don’t post that often but I do follow your adventures,, I’m posting now because the chickens reminded me of a time in my life when I was a bodyguard many years ago ,, and I was working for a friend of mine that was a formula one race car driver,, and his parents had a farm in California and they had chickens lots of them ,, the parents moto was if you didn’t work you didn’t eat so we were on the side of the house chopping wood and not to far from where we were was the chicken coop ,, that’s what they called it and the parent had a man that they hired to kill the chickens , he’d grab them by the neck and with a good twist of his wrist snap their necks and he did this very quickly,, then he’d get a big bucket and fill it with warm to hot water and put the chickens in it to let them soak ,, then it would be easier to pluck the feathers off,, and guess whose job that turned out to be????? Yep ,,,, we were sitting there plucking feathers ,, it’s a smell you never for get,, I like chicken and it took me a while before I was ready to eat chicken again after that,,I could raise them and care for them because I like all animals but I would have to have someone else do the killing., and yes kris in the very near future I plan on visiting panama,, retirement looks good there,, I will need to find my rib when I get there because no man should live alone ,, take care and keep the adventure going it’s great to read your posts, David,, PS I was looking on a map of the world for places to retire and when I came to Panama there it was ,,,, A city with my Name David in panama ,, is that a sign or what ??.

The city is named after you? Well there you go, obviously you must live here 😀 Seriously it is a pretty good life here, and Panama is full of really lovely women so things could work out for you. As for the chickens, I have a feeling I am going to be learning new things next month. I figure if I eat chickens I am responsible for their deaths, at least indirectly, so it’s only another step to deal with these chickens. We shall see how far I get with that.

Just got back from another great visit to Panama City. Ate at Roberto Durans place. Just missed meeting him. Met Ricardo & familia. He can be seen on U Tube under Makenka. He’s the lead singer. He also teaches English. We swam at his school after hours. I miss it there already but will be back in Feb. Love the blog Kris. Ciao, David.
