Toucans in the Neighborhood

My neighbor across the street has some papaya trees in her yard and the toucans have been visiting in the mornings and late afternooons. She knows I love to see them so the other day she called me when they were visiting.

There is a family of three, parents and a youngster. Since they are known to stay fairly close to home we figure they must have a nest in the area.

Only one will come and eat at a time, and the others will wait hidden in the trees.

She figured this was the youngster because the bill was smaller than on the others.

It’s pretty cool to have these beautiful and exotic birds visiting our neighborhood on a regular basis!

How cool is that! I thought they only liked higher altitudes and forested areas? Guess I will keep looking for them on my property! Thanks Kris

    • These were taken with a Canon SX700. It’s not fancy but it’s small enough to take anywhere, and easy to grab if something interesting comes along. There are SO many birds here. You are going to have fun!

  8. We were able to see Toucans in the wild when we visited Portobelo. Plus we saw some at Saffaricks Zoologic just outside of Colon. Great place to see many of the indigenous animals of Panama.

    • Interesting. I’ve heard Portobelo is a beautiful place, and one of these days I’ve got to go there. Believe it or not, we saw toucans in Panama City on Ancon Hill. I’ve also seen quite a few when we were at the Rambala Lodge, over near Chiriqui Grande on the Caribbean side.

I saw some toucans when we were last in Panama, but not as pretty as these. The coloring is different from the ones we saw when we were there. You are lucky to have them visit your neighborhood.
