Geisha coffee, the most expensive coffee in the world, is grown right here in Boquete. Recently, an auction drove the price to a record high, $1,029 a pound!

Panama is known for the excellent coffee grown in the fertile soil of the cooler highlands. Geisha, however, is a very different type of coffee. The plants aren’t as productive which means less is available and the flavor is more like a fruity tea, which is probably why the Japanese love it.
No, we don’t drink Geisha coffee here, and certainly not at $75/cup. We prefer the more traditional coffee, of which many delicious varieties are available in any local supermarket.
I think Chiriqui Provence is the most productive area in Panama. Almost everything we need is grown right here in our backyard – fruits, vegetables, beans, rice, dairy, beef, chicken, pork, and you can get fresh fish as soon as the boats bring it in.
And, now that I’ve finished my cup of Palo Alto coffee, I’m ready to get on with my day.

Several years ago I was invited to a free night at Finca Lerida, ABOVE Boquete in return for writing about them in my blog. I actually wrote TWO articles about them. I was given a private “cupping” of the coffee they grow there. Some of it was geisha. Frankly, I was NOT IMPRESSED and I don’t know what the fuss is about. It’s sort of like over in France every year people go nuts over the Nouvelle Beaujolais. Much ado about nothing in my book. But what the heck do I know, anyway? I prefer Rolling Stones over Rachmaninoff…

I don’t think I’ve ever tried that one but in general, the fancy expensive wines are usually lost on me. I can find something in the supermarket that makes me happy.

I tried the Geisha coffee on a tour also, and I wasn’t impressed either. It hardly tasted like coffee at all. Rachmaninov is one of my favorite composers, but we also have a lot of fun playing Rolling Stones songs in the band. Coffee though, I’m pretty easy to please with a number of supermarket choices available here. Ditto with wine.
