Alaska – Day #6

Alaska818B5

The Indian totems. They built them to tell stories. When the Christians came they made the Indians stop making totems thinking they were using them to worship other gods, but later they understood they were just stories so the Indians were allowed to resume the practice. Colors are iron ore, copper ore, charcoal, and ground seashells mixed with chewed salmon eggs for white paint. They have trouble getting the women to chew the salmon eggs now though, so they often just go to the hardware store and get exterior grade latex paint.
