Snakes, bugs… I know, I know but I keep seeing things I’ve never seen before. This bug was sitting on a pail in the utility room one night, and then on the broom handle. It looked like some sort of mosaic work of art!
You’ve got to admit, that’s a pretty interesting bug. And, it doesn’t look like it bites or stings or does anything unpleasant.
It looks like a Grasshopper.
The last time we were in Davis, we stopped at Rey to buy some ice for the cooler and in front of a post next to a lady selling lottery tickets was the “largest” bug we have seen in Panama. The body was about as big as your Grasshopper, but it had Ginormous long legs, that made it bigger than my hand. I touched it and it was alive, just sedentary.

Looks like Grasshopper to me too.

It could be. I’ll have to do some research on it.

It looks very similar to a grasshopper but when disturbed it stretches out in a long slim shape almost like a twig, and I haven’t seen grasshoppers do that. I’ve seen other smaller bugs like this but never one this big or beautiful.
You know I’ll be checking the posts every time we go to El Rey! I’d love to see the bug you saw.

An American Salmonfly, maybe? (from ALA).. ?

I had to look that up. Wow, those are beautiful too! This one didn’t have those long, delicate wings though.

Yikes. I like tropical climates, but I’m creeped out but the ginormous critters! Haha.

Ut oh. We have critters everywhere, mostly birds and bugs, and a few of them do get a bit ginormous. Thankfully the vast majority are harmless and they keep life here interesting.
