Yesterday I saw the biggest grasshopper I’d ever seen! It was maybe four inches long and really beautiful. My friend and I were walking around my yard and she spotted in on one of my pineapple plants. She wanted to kill immediately, saying it would eat everything in my garden. I convinced her to put her shoe back on and let the grasshopper live so I could take some photos, but I had to promise to toss it into the woods when I was finished.
This grasshopper was interesting to photograph because it didn’t move much, and it looked directly at me when I pointed the camera at it. At one point it slowly moved from one pineapple leaf to another, almost like it thought it wanted some different poses. When I was finished I put it in a bucket and it just placidly let me scoop it up. Thank you grasshopper for being so interesting and beautiful, and for cooperating with me so well in our photo shoot. I hope you are having a good time in the woods, and don’t come back to eat my garden.

The neighbors think I’m a bit odd, but I generally don’t kill anything if I can help it. It’s much more fun to catch things with a camera!

I’ve got a big one in the garden too. I managed to get a a couple of pics before he hopped away. They don’t stay long, just until they’ve had their fill of my lillly leaves. 🙂

My neighbor was upset that I wouldn’t kill it because she thought it would eat my whole garden. This one was slow though. He looked like he was in slow motion going from one leaf to another, and didn’t hop anywhere until I tossed him over the fence.

Have a bunch of those around here in Boqueron every year. Also, keep your eye out for a black grasshopper with red stripes. They’re a lot smaller than the yellow ones and a lot hungrier.

These photos were taken with my Nikon D5000, and 18-200mm lens. That is an excellent camera and a very versatile lens, but also a very expensive rig and big to carry around. Our other camera is a Panasonic HDC-TM90. It’s small, lightweight, fits in your hand or purse. It’s made for videos but it also takes very good still shots. It has a killer zoom feature and unlike the Nikon, it will focus very quickly so you can take photos from a moving car. As much as I love my Nikon, if I had to choose only one it would be the Panasonic.
