Black Witch Moth

This fantastic moth was hanging out in our laundry room today. It’s so big I was a bit startled when I first saw it, and thought it might be a bird at first glance until I quickly saw that it flew like a moth or butterfly.

First it landed on something on a high storage shelf. Joel got close with a tape measure so you can see how big it was.

Later it landed on Joel's tools.

It also landed on a pink shirt I had hung up to dry which was very good for taking photos.

After some hunting around on the net we finally figured out that this is a male Black Witch Moth. In some cultures it is supposed to be bad luck or a harbinger of death. They are nocturnal and sure enough, when I went back to look for it at dusk, it had flown away.

There always seems to be something new and interesting around here, and usually something really beautiful! It was also interesting trying to identify it because I came across many other photos of fantastic moths that can be found in this area. I will continue to keep my eyes open and a camera close at hand.

Santa Catalina, Panama

After our visit to Pedasi and the Azuero Peninsula, we headed to Santa Catalina for a couple nights. After a beautiful drive down and an evening in the most total darkness I’d ever experienced (power outage, thank goodness for the borrowed flashlight!) we woke up in a really beautiful area.

We stayed at the Hotel Santa Catalina, one of a number of hotels in the area. This is a famous surfing spot, location of some world surfing events. This is evident when you walk around the little town which consists of mainly hotels, restaurants, and surfing shops.

That’s a start. Now let me go see what other photos I have that might be interesting.

Es un hermoso día en el barrio. (It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood)

I’m sitting here on the terrace after a very fun bike ride around the neighborhood. The neighbors up the street have the salsa music on. The people behind seem to be preparing for a family picnic on their terrace. The sun is shining, the breeze is blowing gently. The birds are singing, the dogs are barking, the kids are playing, and the butterflies are flitting about. So, if you are up north and getting cold, here’s a bit of warm sunshine sent your way  ~~~~~~~>

Driving in the Azuero Peninsula

Tuesday we left Pedasi and headed up the Azuero Peninsula, west to Santiago, and then south again to Santa Catalina. It was a long drive, but on good roads through absolutely beautiful countryside.

I’m starting to get caught up! It looks like I have a folder of photos from Santa Catalina, and then it’s on to the photos of the parade from yesterday.

More Island Photos

Send me somewhere with a camera and a beautiful setting, and you know what will happen! These are a few of my favorites.

Isla Iguana

While we were in Pedasi, we spent an afternoon at a nearby wildlife refuge, Isla Iguana. (Iguana Island). It’s a really beautiful place and the weather was perfect, so we had a gorgeous day to enjoy such an outing.

About the police boats – apparently this area is close enough to Columbia to have occasional drug smugglers trying to get through, so the police patrol the area carefully. Someone told us that there was a bust in a town just a little ways north of here.

I had to show our passports to the police before we got in the boat. Then, on the way out a police boat came along side and had a lengthy conversation with the boat captain about who we were, where we were going, how he came to be taking us to the island, etc. There were three men on this boat, one with his face covered and a large machine gun. They seemed calm and polite but the look was a bit scary. I asked if I could take a photo of them and was told “no”, but Joel had his iPad in his lap and got a fantastic one (I will try to get my hands on his iPad and post it!)

Later, another boat stopped near the island and stayed for quite a while. One of the men appeared to be watching the island with binoculars, another talked on the phone, and the others just hung out. I snapped a few photos trying to look like I was just photographing the area in general because I didn’t want to get in trouble for taking their photo. Thank goodness for a decent zoom lens 😉

Other than this minor excitement, it was a really nice time on the island. The water was clear, calm, and a perfect temperature. I enjoyed hiking across the island and watching the birds. The hotel had packed us a picnic lunch in a cooler, and sent us with a bag of beach towels. I mentioned snorkels earlier but somehow we didn’t end up with them, so next time I will definitely have to do this. The water is definitely clear and beautiful enough to make snorkeling a pleasure, and there is a lot of coral and sea life here.

Another interesting thing that we just missed – whales come here to have their babies and take care of them until they are strong enough to move on. I will have to keep this in mind for a return visit!

A google search will bring up websites like THIS ONE, if you want to read more about the island. I’m off to see what other photos I have standing by.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Eerie

Weekly Photo Challenge: Eerie

To Merilee, a photo doesn’t have to be blatantly macabre to be eerie. But it can have a mysterious, otherworldly vibe — the viewer wonders what lurks in the shadows. Something eerie has a story to tell — one you aren’t quite sure you want to know.  Finding inspiration in Merilee’s work, as well as celebrations like Halloween and Día de los Muertos, let’s go out and capture black and white images that are eerie.

eerie

We arrived in Santa Catalina, a remote town on the Pacific coast of Panama, at dusk. Soon after we arrived, a rain storm blew in and the electricity went out. I have never seen such total blackness! You literally couldn’t see your hand in front of your face. I was thankful we had some fixings for a cold dinner, which we ate by flashlight. I think the experience was even more eerie than the photo.

Today is Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)  in Panama. It isn’t like Halloween in the US with parties, scary stuff, and candy. Here it is a quiet day where people honor their departed ancestors, and go to cemeteries to put flowers and gifts on the graves. There is no loud music or liquor sales today.

Tomorrow this will change because it’s another holiday, Separation Day. The next day is yet another holiday, and then there are still more holidays to come! November is holiday month in Panama! Later, there is Mother’s Day on Dec 8th which is a very big deal here, and then Christmas. If you love to have fun and celebrations, this is a good time to be in Panama.

What a Downpour!

I think it rained harder this afternoon than I’d ever seen it rain.

We could hear the river roaring, so as the rain let up we decided to go take a look.

Then, we reached the river!

When we got back home the rain was only a slight sprinkle, and the remains of the lake in the neighbor’s yard were pretty.

We went down to the river after a rain before, but it didn’t look like we found it today!

Exploring Pedasi and the Azuero Peninsula

We are home again, and back to functioning internet. Travels are great but it’s always nice to come home again. I’ve been settling back in, catching up on things around here, and now I’m in my outside office (on the terrace) watching an incredible amount of rain come down. Yes, the neighbor’s yard is a lake again 😀

I have lots of photos and things to say about our recent travels. What a great trip! Of course the highlight was meeting my blogging friends. But, I was also very interested to see some of this area that I have heard about for a long time.

The town of Pedasi feels to me like a beach town, which is no surprise since the area is known for the great beaches, swimming, surfing, snorkeling, diving, and other water related activities. The town is small enough that you can easily walk anywhere, and it was quiet while we were there. (They were probably recovering from the recent parades and celebrations!) The local people all returned our greetings with friendly smiles and hellos. Some were also happy to chat with us, point out homes of other expats, and other things about the town that they thought might interest us. We were also out walking in the dark and it felt comfortable and safe. It feels like a town where everyone knows everyone else who lives there, and everyone just wants to get along and enjoy life.

There are many expats and tourists who come to Pedasi. There were a number of hotels, hostels, and restaurants available for visitors, and English speakers were more common than most parts of Panama. Our hotel Casita Margarita was happy to make arrangements for activities for us. I’m sure the other hotels would also, and there are some local businesses who cater to tourists wanting to enjoy what is available in the area. Because it is a popular destination though, we found real estate and property prices higher than I expected.

The drive from David is long but the roads are excellent (not counting the bumpy PanAmerican highway which is due for a much needed upgrade) From Santiago to Las Tablas there is a beautiful 4 lane highway. The last part of the drive is on a 2 lane highway but it’s also in excellent condition. It’s the rainy season now and everything was very lush and green, and the countryside is really beautiful. It’s the driest area of Panama and it would be interesting to see what it’s like in the dry season.

This is a start! I have more photos and things to talk about, so stand by.
