Boquete Flower and Coffee Fair

I’ve been too busy doing things to write about them! Thursday we went up to the Flower and Coffee Fair in Boquete, or Feria de las Flores y el Café.  I think the flower and coffee theme was just a good excuse to put on a fair with all kinds of fun and interesting things, but the flowers sure were beautiful too.

Cedo came with us, the neighbor who invited us for dinner on Christmas Eve night with all her family. Our friend Holly of the Let The Adventure Begin blog met us there. We also saw Cindy of the Chapter 3 – Retirement in Panama blog (check out her post about the fair).

I’m glad we went. It was a fun day and the weather was perfect. I enjoyed seeing everything and sharing a nice time with good people.

Boquete is a small town so it gets very congested during big events like this. But, we went on a weekday afternoon and didn’t have any trouble parking or making our way through town. I’d definitely go back again another year.

An Interesting Spider

More crawly things, I know, but there are just too many interesting bugs and spiders around here.

One morning I noticed this really cool, and quite large bug on leaf outside the window.

OK, I think I am done with the bugs for the moment, but I’m sure there will be more later.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Window

Weekly Photo Challenge: Window

THIS WEEK, IN A POST CREATED SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS CHALLENGE, SHARE A PHOTO WITH A WINDOW. You can interpret it however you’d like, and I think there are many possibilities here.

I didn’t feel like looking through a window, but rather at a window and the reflections.

A New Spot at the River

There is a large space next to our neighborhood ready for houses, and the other day my neighbor and I went there to hunt for stones to build fountains. I also discovered that there is a road down to the river. So, of course, I had to go back with my camera and explore a bit.

It’s fun to find a new spot by the river. I still love the area near our house with the big rock the best though. I should go back to this new spot again when the sun is lower in the sky to explore more and take some better photos. I love the river and it’s always beautiful wherever and whenever you go.

Bloggers Fun Day Out in Boquete!

Our friends Connie (Our Third Life – Pedasi)  and Mikkel from Pedasi came to David to do a few things, and figured while they were here they would go to the Tuesday market in Boquete. Since Holly (Let the Adventure Begin) was going to be working at the market, we all had the opportunity to get together!

That’s Holly on the left (her right), Connie in the middle, and me on the right.

It’s always fun when you get the chance to spend time in person with someone you follow and get to know on line.

I was surprised at how busy it was at the market. The place was packed when we arrived. We also saw some other friends we didn’t expect to run into, and were introduced to some new friends. I was happy to see Lynn of the Rambala Lodge too. I enjoy following her adventures on Facebook and we are looking forward to visiting the lodge again in the near future.

The crowd was starting to thin by the time we left but as you can see, there were still a lot of people enjoying the company and looking at all the interesting things for sale.

When I started blogging I had no idea how much it would add to my life, and how many new friends I would make because of it!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Beginning

Weekly Photo Challenge: Beginning

This week’s theme might be obvious, but I couldn’t help it — it’s a simple and common word, yet can evoke very powerful, emotional images. Let’s see beginning through your lens!

Beginning? That sounds easy enough but the more I planned this photo challenge, the more I realized that my beginnings were actually just points in a cycle.

~~~   ~~~   ~~~   ~~~   ~~~   ~~~   ~~~   ~~~   ~~~   ~~~   ~~~   ~~~
Seeds –> Plants –> Flowers –> Fruit –> Seeds —  and so it goes. Papayas are very popular with the birds so hopefully they will leave some for me. I have six good looking guandu plants though and expect to have guandu for months to come. Some of them will be saved for seeds to begin it all again next year.
By the way, guandu are pigeon peas. I’d hardly heard of them in the US but they are extremely popular here. They come in green, green with speckles, and black. According to my neighbor the black ones have the best flavor.
Butterflies at the River
We visited the river a couple days ago and we met with the most interesting sight! There were so many butterflies on the river bank, and quite a few different kinds. It’s the summer dry season now, so I think they are attracted by the water. They all seemed to be gathering where the ground was wet next to the river.
And, of course, I can never go to the river without taking more photos. I think it’s such a beautiful place.
It’s funny to think we are having summer while most of our friends and family are so very cold up north! I wish I could send you all some of this sunshine and warm, balmy air.
Oh, and last but not least there is a bit of video of the butterflies. The shrieking is the kids having a great time on the other side of the river.
Feliz Año Nuevo (Happy New Year!)
New Year’s Eve in Panama is quite the event, and last night did not disappoint. We stayed home in our own neighborhood and had a very good time. Of course there were fireworks involved, and parties, and music, and people in the streets enjoying it all.
We saw four muñecos in the neighborhood. This is a very interesting tradition. An effigy is made of a person, animal, or whatever the person wants to use to represent the year that is leaving, all the bad things that need to leave with it, and the good wishes for the new year. Then, at midnight, the muñeco is set on fire. Since it is usually stuffed with fireworks this can be quite a spectacle!
We saw the first one up the road in a neighbor’s front yard. I believe it represents one of the candidates for president in the upcoming election. Last night it was put on the back of a truck, and the truck was slowly driven all around the neighborhood with the horn honking, and the people in the back waving and shouting greetings.
NewYears13a
The second looked like a lady with yarn hair, painted face, and fancy shoes sitting in a yard chair, legs crossed, drink in her hand, and plastic bag in her lap. We were invited to write our wishes for the coming year in a piece of paper, and put the paper in her bag. Today when we rode by there was nothing left of the lady but a black pile of ashes in the street.
The third was in another front yard, a man made out of old clothes. We stopped by but ended up talking with the people in the house next door – the man was at the end of his sidewalk with suitcases at his feet, and it turns out he was leaving for New York so we had a bit to talk about. We also met his sons and wife, and have plans to get together in a couple weeks to hear about his trip.
The fourth was on our corner where the Colombian people live, and where probably 40 of them had gathered to celebrate the holiday. We got back to our house just as they were lighting their muñenco, and it was a very impressive amount of noise and fire as it exploded and flamed in all directions! Our stop sign will never bee the same.
NewYears13b
I didn’t take my camera because I wanted to relax and enjoy the evening more than I wanted to document it. There sure were some gorgeous fireworks though. I think all together they would been as good as most July 4th displays I’ve seen in the US!  And, as always, there were greetings and hugs and kisses from everyone we passed in the street wishing us Feliz Año Nuevo, or more commonly just Feliz Año. If thing keep going in the direction they have been going, it will be another very happy year indeed.
My friend Cindy also wrote a blog post about seeing other muñecos.
Weekly Photo Challenge: Joy
Weekly Photo Challenge: Joy
This week, let’s set ourselves up for a happy new year: share a photo that shows us JOY.
These are my daughter’s photos of my grandson, but nothing says JOY to me more than these photos of a baby’s delight.
Thank you Amy for letting me steal your photos. There is no photo I could take that would show JOY better than these so I had to do it!
Weekly Photo Challenge: One
Weekly Photo Challenge: One
This week, we want to see photos that focus on one thing. Maybe you’ve got a stark photo of a single tree silhouetted against the setting sun, or a lone sandpiper wandering the beach as waves crash. Perhaps you’ve caught your mother sitting by herself in a moment of quiet contemplation. Maybe you saw a basket of wriggling puppies, and got a photo with a single fuzzy face in focus.
